My recommendation for this field is get a good educational foundation then either work an entry level GIS position or a good internship.  The reasoning for this is that for an analyst to be fully utilized is mostly gained through experience.  The more expsosure a person in this field gets the better they understand what is needed and what areas could be expanded on.
